Agenda

(1) Status of Common Printing Dialog (Lars Uebernickel)

- Lars Uebernickel is developer and now works at Canonical

- Lars may start CPD in May (final Ubuntu 12.04 LTS release 26 April)
  - Lars may do a PPA release in June (to work w/ current Ubuntu)

- CPD may be included in Ubuntu release 12.10 (October 2012)
  - Feature freeze for Ubuntu 12.10 release is end-of-August
  - Most remaining work is CUPS integration and UI code

(2) Status of Common Mobile Print Client (Glen Petrie)

- Architecture work is still in progress
  - Glen is preparing slides for April PWG/OPS meeting

- Looking at PWG Print Job Ticket spec and XML schema
  - Glen found many issues during PWG Last Call on PJT
  - PWG PJT will start PWG Formal Vote w/ IPP JPS3 in May 2012
    - no technical changes are expected - all Last Call issues
      have been resolved

- Looking at Mobile Client capabilities
  - including local display

- Looking at levels of detail to be supported/displayed by Client

- Completed print document processing header files w/ levels

- Doing C implementation (w/ C++ bindings in isolated module)

(3) Google Summer of Code 2012 (Till)

- All GSoC projects should be submitted to GSoC by *this* Friday 9 March
  - One week later, GSoC decides which mentoring organizations to accept

- Mentoring organization can continue to add projects

- Students who apply can bring their own ideas
  - More new projects may be added

- When application period for students closes, GSoC decides how many
  students each mentoring organization can have
  - Mentoring organizations then decide which students to accept

(4) PDF Filter Security Issues (Till, Tim)

- Topic raised by Tim Waugh - see recent email discussions

- Poppler filters run as System user
  - high privilege - high security risk

- Issues caused by copied code due to no exposed xpdf/Poppler API
  - xpdf was forked to create Poppler
  - Poppler internal APIs are NOT guaranteed backward compatible

- Lars has spoken w/ Albert Astals (Poppler maintainer)
  - Content manipulation is an explicit non-goal for Poppler - ouch!
  - Glib binding is also not guaranteed or useful
  - QT binding is not acceptable (much too large)

- Tim's comments on Poppler
  - Poppler has undocumented internal APIs that are not stable
  - Poppler is not content manipulation oriented

- Alternative PDF libraries? (Ira)
  - MuPDF (Artifex)
    - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MuPDF

- GSoC project to write page manipulation (not PDF interpreter)? (Till)
  - n-Up, page ranges, selected (even/odd) pages, reverse order,
    scale to fit
    - list should come from CUPS design (Till)

- ACTION - Till - Write a PDF page manipulation library GSoC project
  - scope may be simply investigation and design spec

(5) Joint PWG / Open Printing Summit in April (Till, Ira)

  - joint meeting w/ PWG at Apple 24-27 April 2012
